Good morning and welcome back to this week’s AI Rundown by Lightscape Partners.

Last week in AI:

  • Rumors of a new AI chip by Apple to run AI on-device puts the tech company in the middle of the hardware and compute competition.

  • Google DeepMind announced AlphaFold 3, the newest generative AI model for predicting the structures of different molecules.

  • LinkedIn and Microsoft released a report on AI in the workplace in 2024. Unsurprisingly, AI adoption continues to grow at rapid rates.

If you’d like a quick refresher on industry terms and the current landscape of AI, skip to the bottom.

Otherwise, let’s get into it.

OpenAI to demo new features and updates today at 1 pm ET. Link.

  • The demo is rumored to include a “Her” style voice assistant with audio and visual features.

  • The demo may include a new search feature making ChatGPT a direct competitor to Google.

  • Altman denied any rumors of a GPT-5 release.

  • More rumors speculate additional capabilities within cell phones, like answering and receiving phone calls inside ChatGPT.

Apple is developing its own AI chip focused on running, not training, AI models. Link.

  • Project ACDC, the codename for Apple’s server project, will bring Apple Chips to data centers, a first for the tech giant.

  • The server chip will likely focus on AI inference, the process of running a model in a live situation.

  • Apple has been working with TSMC to design and bring the chips to production, but a timeline is still unknown.

  • The move puts Apple in the middle of the chip competition dominated by NVIDIA.

Google DeepMind announces AlphaFold 3. Link.

  • The new model is developed by DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs to accurately predict the structure of proteins, DNA, RNA, ligands, and more.

  • The new model has a 50% improvement in drug interaction predictions compared to standard practice.

  • AlphaFold 3 focuses more on molecule prediction, whereas the second version focuses on proteins.

AI in the workplace continues to erupt, according to LinkedIn and Microsoft. Link.

  • In a report published early last week, generative AI adoption in the workplace doubled in the last six months.

  • 75% of knowledge workers are using some form of generative AI, with 78% of AI users leveraging their own AI tools rather than company-licensed ones.

Apple iPads are now AI-enhanced. Link.

  • Apple announced the new iPad Pro will feature the latest M4 chip, a chip that comes with an upgraded Neural Engine purpose-built to run advanced AI.

  • The M4 chip will allow for on-device AI capabilities.
